North Powder has broken ground on its new library; the public is invited to come celebrate this evening

NORTH POWDER – Over two years in the making, the dream of a new public library for the City of North Powder is nearing fruition. Earlier this week, the city officially broke ground on the library and is now inviting the public to join them in celebration this evening.

The event has been a long time coming. Public discussion and initial fundraising on the project originally began around Spring 2023, with a 1.2-million-dollar block grant announced in December of that year. The design has also changed over the years, originally being planned as an add-on to the old North Powder Fire Station before the design transitioned to a standalone structure.

On October 3, 2024, the city unveiled the near final design for the library, showcasing a modern 2,000 square foot design built flush with the existing city hall building. Features announced during this showcase included additional parking capacity, computer workstations, and green spaces, among others. Though some changes to scope and budget have been made since October, North Powder residents can still expect a sleek, modern library for their community.

In the meantime, the city is hosting an official groundbreaking ceremony at 6:00 p.m. this evening (May 15) at the new library site, 340 E Street near City Hall. Photo opportunities will be available, and city leadership will offer some remarks. In a flyer for the ceremony, North Powder wrote, “This is an exciting milestone toward a modern, welcoming space that will serve readers of all ages for years to come.”
