Oregon State Parks updates rules to allow e-bikes on multi-use bike trails

OREGON – The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission recently announced that it has officially updated its rules regarding E-Bike usage on multi-use trails and state beach access areas. The update, approved during the commission meeting on April 23, will officially allow e-bikes on multi-use trails alongside other bicycles, unless otherwise specified or restricted. This rule change further does away with the 8-feet trail width requirement previously mandated for e-bike usage. Going forward, e-bikes will be allowed on all state park trails where regular bicycles are also allowed.

In addition, the rule change allows for some e-bike usage outside of drive-on zones of Oregon’s ocean shore state recreation areas. Specifically, the new rules, as specified by the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission, “allow e-assisted bikes to be ridden outside of where drive on beach is allowed. E-assisted bikes can be ridden only on the wet sand on ocean shore state recreation areas except where specifically prohibited.”

Other updates to the e-bike rules include revised and clearer language for the safe operation of e-bikes, particularly around pets, children, equestrians, and other recreationists. The new rules will go into effect July 1, 2025.
