UMATILLA – The city of Umatilla is opening the new pedestrian bridge across the Umatilla River beginning today (Monday). The span connects the South Hill region to downtown. While the soft opening begins today, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will celebrate the bridge in the spring of 2025.

“The bridge will be open for foot traffic, providing pedestrians with a safe and scenic connection,” the city states in a news release.

The new bridge is designed to enhance connectivity, promote outdoor recreation, and improve safety for residents and visitors. It features ADA accessibility, lighting, and scenic overlooks.

“We are thrilled to soft-open this new pedestrian bridge to foot traffic, providing a safe and convenient way for people to travel while enjoying the beauty of our community,” City Manager David Stockdale said. “This project reflects our dedication to improving the quality of life and promoting sustainable urban design.”

Some work remains to be done, including bollards and handrail installation. That will occur in spring 2025. The bridge marks the completion of the Trail 2 project which is part of the city’s master plan and is a component in Umatilla County’s River Trail Project.

“While there are still final touches to be completed, this bridge represents a safe and accessible connection for pedestrians and cyclists,” Public Works Director Scott Coleman said.
