WALLA WALLA – Detectives from the Walla Walla Police Department, in collaboration with the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab, spent much of Monday processing the scene where human remains were discovered Sunday near Whitman Street and Fern Avenue. Late Monday, WWPD reported additional remains were located at the site during the investigation and that work at the scene will resume Tuesday morning.

Walla Walla police officers first responded to the area at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday after an image was posted on Facebook depicting what appeared to be a femur bone in the dirt.

The first set of bones were uncovered just beneath the surface during excavation work for the Whitman Street improvement project and found on the Pioneer Park side of the project.

The area remains closed and secured, and WWPD asks the community to avoid the area.

“We understand the public’s interest in this case; however, there will be no immediate answers regarding the identity or circumstances of the remains,” WWPD Captain Eric Knudson said.

The Walla Walla County Coroner’s Office will arrange for the remains to be analyzed by the Washington State Forensic Anthropologist. This analysis will include processing and a thorough examination to provide more information.
