BAKER CITY – (Release from the Baker School District) During their regular meeting on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Baker School District board members voted to loan items recovered from the time capsule within the old Central Building cornerstone to Baker Heritage Museum for at least one year.

Items from the time capsule include historical publications and records, antique coins, and other memorabilia, such as a hand-written list of the stone cutters who helped construct the Central Building. Much of the contents are dated from 1915 and 1916, when the building was constructed.

On May 22, 2024, the old Central Building was irreparably damaged by arson fire. Demolition and clean-up of the property took place in July and August, when Dave and Joyce Hunsaker of Baker Heritage Museum recovered the contents of the time capsule within the building’s cornerstone from the contractor and preserved the items for posterity.

“We are so grateful that these important historical items were able to be saved,” says Baker School District board member Andrew Bryan. “Many thanks to the Hunsakers and Baker Heritage Museum. We look forward to sharing them with our community via a future exhibit at the museum.”
