BAKER CITY – Law enforcement officers in Baker City are making sure Eastern Oregon residents, along with their hard-earned money, stay safe this holiday shopping season. The Baker City Police Department offer five tips on how we can protect ourselves from online scams this holiday season. See below their suggestions:

(From the Baker City Police Department)

  1. Stick to Reputable Sites – Avoid unfamiliar sites, especially ones offering deals that seem *too good to be true.* They may be fake or unreliable.
  2. Look for Secure Payment Methods – Only use sites with secure payment options and “https://” in the URL. Be cautious of sites asking for wire transfers or unusual payment methods.
  3. Beware of Fake Ads & Phishing Emails – Scammers create fake ads and send phishing emails with links that lead to fake websites. Don’t click on links from unknown sources—go directly to the retailer’s website
  4. Double-Check Your Bank Statements – Keep an eye on your transactions for suspicious charges. Report any unusual activity to your bank immediately.
  5. Use Strong Passwords & Enable Two-Factor Authentication – Add an extra layer of protection to your accounts to prevent unauthorized access.
