Over 315,000 acres burned within Grant County over fire season

JOHN DAY – Grant County Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Bush was on KJDY’s Coffee Time Tuesday to reflect on a treacherous 2024 fire season. Bush said in Grant County, around 315,000 acres burned. That close to 11% of the entire county. He said his office is waiting to hear back on some potential disaster relief funds:

“We’re queued up. The governor has requested a federal declaration of disaster for six counties in Oregon. Grant County is one of them. We should hear on that in a couple of months, and that will open up some money for folks affected by the fire that currently isn’t available. We’re watching and waiting for that.”

Major fires that burned within county lines include the Falls Fire, the Battle Mountain Complex, the Courtrock Fire, and the Rail Ridge Fire, among several other smaller incidents.
