IMBLER – It should go without saying that cancer is one of the most painful and devastating things anyone can go through. During those difficult times, it’s important to find support, be it from an individual or even an entire community. No one should have to fight alone, and thanks to the efforts of one local student, no-one will have to.

Eva Paulson, a Junior at Imbler High School, is working hard on her senior project, No One Fights Alone, an effort to raise money for local cancer patients currently going through treatment. Specifically, Eva is raising funds to create care baskets for 20 patients at the Grande Ronde Hospital Oncology Clinic.

Some of the items planned for the baskets include hats, fuzzy socks, lotion, Chapstick, hard candies, puzzles, and notebooks, among others. The patients themselves remain anonymous and are being selected by the GRH oncology nurses.

The actual funds for the baskets will primarily come from an upcoming community fun run. The fun run kicks off, on November 11, 8:00 a.m., at Imbler High School. The course will be split between the Imbler High School track and other areas of Imbler. Admission to the fun run is free, though participants and spectators are encouraged to donate. Anyone in the community can participate.

When asked why she specifically chose this as her project, Eva noted: “Recently, I’ve felt like our school has been pretty close with some people who have had cancer, and I felt very deeply about caring for those people.”

Eva also noted that she plans to pursue some form of medical career after high school, possibly oncology nursing or surgical nursing. Overall, the project itself has been going well for Eva, with the hardest part being planning all the different components, such as coordinating with the Oncology nurses to distribute baskets. When asked what she found most interesting about the project, Eva said it was getting to speak with the Oncology nurses themselves and learning about the work they do.

Again, for anyone interested in participating, the fun run kicks off, on November 11, 8:00 a.m., at the Imbler High School. Admission is free but donations are welcome. For anyone going through cancer treatments or may know someone who is, remember, no one fights alone. Flyer below:
