HERMISTON – Erik Ibarra, 18, of Echo is facing a felony charge of assault of a police officer after allegedly being involved in an incident Wednesday at the municipal parking lot across from Hermiston City Hall. Police Chief Jason Edmiston said officers were responding to a reported domestic disturbance involving a man jumping on a vehicle with people inside.

The people in the vehicle were identified as Ibarra’s mother, sister, and two small children. When police arrived, Ibarra is reported to have completely smashed the windshield of the vehicle.

“When the first officer was speaking to Ibarra, he was initially calm, then ran toward the officer’s vehicle and began trying to get in,” Edmiston stated. “When the officer grabbed him, he turned and began flailing his arms, scratching the officer’s neck and arm before being taken to the ground.”

Edmiston said Ibarra’s hands sustained superficial cuts from punching the windshield. He was checked out by EMS before being transported to the Umatilla County Jail. He added that the officer is fine.

The other charges against him are second-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, menacing, and disorderly conduct.
