La Grande’s Greenwood Elementary students have a new book vending machine

LA GRANDE – Students at Greenwood Elementary in La Grande have been given a brand-new Book Vending Machine. In a school-wide assembly yesterday, September 11, students, staff and those in attendance were able to be a part of the Ribbon Cutting and unveiling of this new machine.

Members of the Greenwood PTS were on hand for the unveiling, thanking those who were involved with obtaining the Book Vending Machine.  This addition was made possible, in part, thanks to a grant from the Wildhorse Foundation for $7,636.

According to information released in late May of 2024, this machine brings to life our “vision of incorporating Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine with our Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS).” Also noting that, “the concept behind this initiative is simple, yet incredibly powerful: when our students meet a PBIS goal, they earn a token to select a free book from the vending machine.”

PBIS behaviors that students are encourages to exhibit include

•Respect

•Responsibility

•Integrity

•Self-Discipline

•Perseverance

•Citizenship

•Courage

•Compassion

•Academic Independence

When a teacher or staff member sees a student exhibiting these behaviors a card with the student’s name is placed in to a bowl, each morning three to five names are drawn to win a prize.  Among the possible prizes now is a token for the Book Vending Machine.
