Breakfasts and Lunches are free for La Grande students again this year

LA GRANDE – Each year when school starts there are always questions regarding school meals and what sort of cost will be passed along to families for those meals. Lindsey Meinhard with La Grande School District recently shared some good news with Elkhorn Media Group regarding the district meals program,

(EMG) Thank you for speaking with me today Lindsey.  Like we usually do, we have received inquiries regarding costs associated with meals for students within the La Grande School District so lets talk about that. Are meals still available free to students?

(LM) Yes, zero cost for all students with no paperwork or sign up. All a student needs to do is get in line!

(EMG) What meals are provided?

(LM) Breakfast and lunch, everyday.

(EMG) Are “weekend” meals available

(LM) No, we can only provide meals during school.

(EMG) Are there any “new” foods that the district will introduce this year?

(LM) This year we have new grape varieties like Cotton Candy and Tear Drop being offered at the elementary schools, and we also have new whole grain lasagna rollup. Kids should also try the pizza on Wednesdays if they haven’t for a while, we switched to Wild Mike’s Pizza last year, and it is a really high quality whole grain pizza that is made in Oregon. Kids really love the taste.

(EMG) Anything important that you feel people should know.

(LM) I just learned that on average, students who eat school breakfast have been shown to achieve 17.5% higher scores on standardized math tests and attend 1.5 more days of school per year (No Kid Hungry). That’s a pretty impressive statistic! Balanced nutrition throughout the day really does contribute to student success in and out of the classroom.

(EMG) How can people contact you if they have questions about LGSD meals?

(LM) You can call me at 541-663-3229 or email me at lindsey.meinhard@lagrandesd.org
