COLLEGE PLACE – The Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction has sent a letter to the College Place School Board stating the recently passed resolution ensuring biological males do not participate in female athletics goes against state law.

OSPI Chief Communications Officer Katy Payne said under state law, school districts must allow students the opportunity to participate in athletic activities in a matter that is consistent with their gender identity.

College Place’s resolution cites inherent biological differences that can create unfair and unsafe competition. Last month, Board President Mandy Thompson expressed the board’s dedication to supporting all students while ensuring the protection of female students.

Payne said OSPI’s initial action was to inform CPPS that their resolution could be discriminatory if it is enforced as written. OSPI also said in the letter that it will take further action if CPPS acts in accordance with the resolution.
