Case of pertussis confirmed in Walla Walla County resident

WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla County Department of Community Health has confirmed a county resident has tested for Bordetella pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

The individual does not have a recent history of travel outside of the area, indicating it may be circulating in the community.

Pertussis is a potentially serious respiratory illness that can spread easily through respiratory droplets expelled through coughing and sneezing. Pertussis is particularly dangers in infants, with approximately 1 in 3 infants requiring hospital care, according to WWCDCH.

Health officials recommend staying up to date on vaccinations, practicing good hygiene, and contacting a healthcare provider if experiencing breathing difficulties.
