WALLOWA COUNTY – (Release from the U.S. Forest Service) Hat Point Lookout, located along Forest Service Road 4240 in Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, is closed due to safety concerns. The length of this closure is currently being determined.
Broken steps and railings and other structural concerns have led to the closure. The closure includes public use of both the lower and upper observation decks, as well as administrative use of the cab for lookout purposes. Visitors can expect to see barricades and closure signage by the beginning of the ramp onto the lower deck.
All other public services at the site are available and will be maintained for the remainder of the season. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the views of the Snake River, Hells Canyon, and the Seven Devils from the picnic area and trail below the tower.
A plan to repair the stairs and other critical safety needs is being developed to return the lookout to service quickly as possible.
Direct any questions or concerns regarding this closure to the Wallowa Mountains front desk at 541-426-5546.
