LA GRANDE — The La Grande Police Department is warning residents of a scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers. The department has received reports of people pretending to be officers or detectives, claiming that the target has missed a subpoena, grand jury appearance, or court date. The scammers then demand a fine be paid to avoid legal consequences.
Authorities stress that the La Grande Police Department will never request payment over the phone or demand money to prevent legal actions. The scammers may use apps to make it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate phone number associated with City Hall or the police department.
Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and to refrain from sharing any personal or financial information.
Anyone who believes they have been contacted by one of these scammers is urged to report the incident to the La Grande Police Department at 541-963-1017 or visit the department in person.
The police department is urging the community to remain vigilant and to spread the word to help protect others from falling victim to this scam.
