CRANE, Oregon: The Albuquerque Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the Porcupine Fire this morning at 0700. Yesterday’s activities consisted of a successful burnout along the southeastern/eastern perimeter, aviation attack including retardant drops, and construction of hand & dozer lines. Today’s operations will consist of securing the dozer line along the northwest perimeter, mopping up along the edge of the eastern line and securing the edge of the southwestern line where firefighters burned out the previous day. Additional burning operations to clean up portions of unburned fuel along the southwestern line will also occur today.

Message from the Incident Commander, Lino Baca: “Our team has decades of experience fighting fires around the country and we are happy to serve the communities here in East Oregon once again. Our vast experiences enable us to effectively implement a values-driven full-suppression strategy in coordination with affected landowners. The fuel types in the region are very comparable to those we see on our lands back home, and we are grateful for the opportunity to assist our neighbors in the North during this time of extensive fire behavior. We define success as safely achieving objectives with the least firefighter exposure necessary, simultaneously enhancing stakeholder support. We plan to be fully successful while adhering to our core values of duty, respect, and integrity.”

Location: Approximately 8.5 miles southeast of Crane near Circle Bar.

Values at risk: Within the Temporary Flight Restriction radius of the Porcupine Fire, there are multiple values at risk (structures and miscellaneous infrastructure) including the Sage Grouse Habit and parts of HWY 78.
