HEPPNER – Fire officials invite the public to join them for an informational community meeting at Heppner City Hall today (Monday) at 6 p.m. City hall is at 111 North Main St.

Those leading the fight to contain the complex of fires will be on hand to talk about current operations. Area leaders and community partners will also share information about current operations. There will also be time for questions from the public.

The meeting will be recorded and published after it’s over for those who are unable to attend.

At last report, containment of the complex was at 32 percent. Firefighters are continuing to put out lingering hot spots and increase the depth of mop-up operations. During mop up, crews cool hot spots around the perimeter and build depth as they push into the burned area to create a buffer preventing any re-heated materials from escaping the perimeter.

Officials say residents should continue to expect to see smoke in the interior and on the unburnt island within the perimeter within the fire’s footprint. Helicopter resources are patrolling the fire and will provide bucket-drop support when visibility allows.
