PENDLETON – The Historical District Sign Ad-hoc Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. today to discuss proposed changes to the sign ordinance that would govern signs that are used in the historical district downtown. The committee is calling for the public to come forward and provide input about the signage for the area between the river and the railroad tracks and mid-block of Southeast Third and Southwest Third streets.
The Pendleton City Council considered the ordinance at its June 18 meeting and tabled the matter. The vote was delayed to plan a public meeting with business owners and residents impacted by the ordinance.
The new rules apply only to businesses in the specified district and are only applicable to new signs and murals that are proposed to be installed. Businesses outside of the area will continue to be regulated by the existing sections of the ordinance.
The proposed changes would still allow sidewalk sandwich boards. Electronic reader boards would only be allowed on buildings constructed after 1950 on Southeast and Southwest Second or Third streets. Those boards would have black backgrounds and may display lettering only. In addition, some electronic message boards would be considered for the rest of the historic district for theaters, cinemas, and churches.
The meeting is in council chambers at Pendleton City Hall. It is also available via Zoom. The meeting ID is 898 0321 5536 and the pass code is 255715.
