BAKER CITY — As the Miners Jubilee festivities begin this Friday, the Baker City Police Department is reminding residents and visitors to prioritize safety during the three-day celebration, which includes the popular Broncs and Bulls Rodeo.
Chief Ty Duby says extra officers will be patrolling town over the weekend
“Oregon State Police are stepping in with a couple of troopers to assist us,” Duby said. “There will definitely be an extra police presence.”
Chief Duby says specially trained officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers and advises everyone to be safe on the road
“Please, be cautious on the roads. Watch out for drunk drivers, and if you need a ride, call someone. Don’t drive intoxicated,” he advised.
He also reminded the community about ongoing road construction on 10th Street, urging everyone to be mindful of the busy conditions. “It’s a good reminder for everybody to be safe and have a good time,” Duby added.
In addition to safety during the festivities, Chief Duby addressed a recent increase in thefts around town.
“We’ve had a few vehicle thefts, guns stolen from vehicles, and even a home burglary,” he said. “During the summer months, we always see an uptick in thefts, particularly from unlocked vehicles. We want to remind everyone to lock their vehicles and not to leave firearms inside.”
The Miners Jubilee, held annually since the late 1800s, is a three-day celebration of Baker County’s gold mining heritage. The event, which takes place on the third weekend of July, brings Baker County’s history to life with a parade, vendors in the park, a large food court, music, a sidewalk fair, mining demonstrations, and kids’ activities. This year, the celebration runs from Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21. Bronc Riding will be featured on Friday night and Bull Riding on Saturday night.
Additionally, the Baker County Public Library has announced that its public parking lot at 2400 Resort St. will be reserved for ADA parking only during Miners Jubilee weekend, beginning Friday, July 19. Visitors using the lot are reminded to display a Disabled Person Parking Permit.
