Union County Fair selects John Collins as 2024 Grand Marshal

UNION COUNTY – The Union County Fair Board has officially selected John Collins as the 2024 fair Grand Marshal. In a recent release, the Fair wrote the following Bio of Collins and his contributions to Union County:

“Celebrating John Collins

In September of 1967, John Collins drove his Buick Skylark into La Grande, Oregon, with three simple goals in mind. Little did he know, those aspirations would shape a life of profound contribution to Union County, where he and his wife Connie have built their legacy over five decades.

A Passion for Sports and Community

John’s journey in Union County began with his love for baseball. He came to Eastern for their baseball program where he excelled for the Mountaineers baseball team from 1968 to 1971. He played semi-pro baseball for the Pitchford Mack Springfield team, traveling across the Pacific Northwest.  His achievements earned him a place in the Eastern Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, recognizing his outstanding career and contributions to the sport.

Career and Contributions

After graduating from Eastern in 1971, John embarked on a career path that mirrored his deep connection to the land and community. He ventured into real estate, specializing in farms and ranches, where his knowledge and passion for Union County’s beauty shone through. His dedication was acknowledged when he was named Realtor of the Year in 2008, a testament to his commitment and expertise in the field.

Family and Legacy

John and Connie, married in 1971, have been pillars of support for each other and the community. They raised their daughter, Johnna, instilling in her the same love for sports and community involvement. John spent countless hours coaching softball and supporting youth sports, while Connie diligently managed the administrative side, ensuring every game ran smoothly.

Commitment to Agriculture and Education

Beyond sports, John’s heart lies in agriculture and education. He and Connie have been ardent supporters of FFA and 4H, actively participating in auctions and assisting with sales to support the next generation of farmers and ranchers. John believes deeply in these organizations’ role in educating youth about farming’s significance, whether they pursue careers directly on the land or in related fields.

Life in Union County

For John and Connie, Union County isn’t just a place to live; it’s their haven. Despite opportunities to travel and explore elsewhere, they find true peace and fulfillment in their piece of Union County. Their cattle herd of over 200 cows stands as a testament to their dedication to farming and ranching, where they’ve experienced the joys and challenges firsthand.

Conclusion

John Collins embodies the spirit of Union County through his unwavering dedication to sports, community service, agriculture, and family. His life’s work and contributions have left an indelible mark on the fabric of this community, inspiring generations to come. As we honor him this week, let us celebrate a man whose roots run deep, whose heart beats for Union County, and whose legacy continues to shape the lives of those around him.
