BAKER COUNTY – At approximately 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 7, multiple agencies responded to a vehicle fire along Highway 86 (Milepost 35 Westbound) near Baker City. The fire spread to nearby grass and impacted traffic along the highway for several hours before being contained. The Oregon State Police have since released a full description of the incident in a recent press log:
“OSP responded to a car fire on SR86 near milepost 35. A 2000 Chevrolet C35 Dually Pickup truck pulling a trailer with a side by side was traveling westbound when the driver noticed that the camper on his truck began to smoke on the right passenger side. The driver pulled over and parked on the right shoulder. The camper caught fire and eventually fully engulfed the truck. The driver was able to unhook the trailer and the trailer/side by side did not sustain any damage.
Approximately 2-3 acres of private property was damaged as the fire spread to a field on the right roadside. Also, approximately 1-2 acres of ODOT right away was also damaged. The owners of the property were on scene. ODOT assisted with traffic control. The roadway was blocked for approximately 15 minutes as Rural Fire Departments extinguished the flames. The roadway was then opened up for a single lane of travel as the Fire Departments continued to work at the scene. No injuries were reported at the scene. Blue Mt Towing will respond to the scene tomorrow to remove the truck.
The following agencies assisted at the scene., Eagle Valley Fire, Pine Valley Fire, North Powder Fire, Keating Fire, Oregon Dept of Forestry, GlassGow, Rangeland Fire Protection Association, US Forest Service and the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.”
