Baker, Harney & Malheur counties under excessive heat watch through Friday

EASTERN OREGON – The National Weather Service HAS issued an updated excessive heat watch valid from Monday 11 a.m. until Friday 11 p.m. for Baker, Harney and Malheur counties.

The weather service describes, “Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures up to 109 degrees possible.”

“Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities,” according to the NWS.

Hot weather safety: Weather service tips for staying safe and healthy

  • Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Seek shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
  • Avoid sun exposure: Stay out of the sun, and make sure to check up on relatives and neighbors.
  • Child and pet safety: Do not leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
  • Caution outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
  • Select the ideal time: If possible, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening for more favorable conditions.
  • Recognize heat-related issues: Recognize the warning signs and familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.

If someone is overwhelmed by the heat, swiftly relocate them to a cool, shaded location.
