BAKER CITY — A Baker City woman faces charges after police say she allegedly assaulted her 10-year-old son while drunk.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Baker City Police Detective Michael Regan responded to a distress call on 9th & L Street on Wednesday, June 26. Detective Regan spoke with a 10-year-old boy, who said his mom had hit him in the face with a slipper. Regan says he observed a red mark on the boy’s neck. The boy also said his mother had also held his nose and mouth, making it difficult for him to breathe for about 3-5 seconds, as well as slapping McDonald’s food out of his hands after they arrived home.

Detective Regan then spoke with the boy and his mother, 36-year-old Kara Sue Cooper,  at their residence on 10th Street. Upon arrival, Regan noticed what appeared to be McDonald’s chicken nuggets scattered on the ground in the driveway. Kara Cooper then confirmed the incident, explaining that she had struck her son after he called her a derogatory name. She also admitted to a physical altercation inside the house, which escalated as she tried to prevent the boy from leaving.

Cooper also admitted to putting her hand over her son’s mouth while he was screaming. According to the report, Detective Regan detected a strong smell of alcohol on Kara’s breath.

Kara confirmed that she had been drinking earlier that day upon returning home from work.

She was arrested and charged with one count of Strangulation and one count of Harassment.
