PILT money is distributed to Oregon counties

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of interior is sending Payments in Lieu of Taxes funding to more than 1,900 state and county governments totaling more than $621 million dollars. PILT payments are made to help defray the costs associated with maintaining services for local governments that cannot tax federal lands.
The payments are administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. They also cover lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The payments are based on the acreage of federal land within the area in question.
In the past, the local governments had to choose whether they wanted to receive PILT money or funding from Secure Rural Schools. The formula for funding has changed and Umatilla County Commissioner John Shafer says that counties are now eligible for both revenue streams. Here is how PILT funding is being dispersed in Oregon:
