Severe storm rips through Nyssa, damaging property and knocking down power lines

NYSSA – Crews continue to clear the streets after a severe thunderstorm ripped through the town of Nyssa in Malheur County on Wednesday, June 26.

Police continue to ask that residents remain in their homes unless absolutely necessary. They are also asking that people avoid South Hwy 201 between Nyssa and Adrian as there are power lines down in the area.

Officers are reporting power lines down and laying in water as well as trees about to fall over around the city.

The Malheur County Sheriff’s Office reports at least 12 downed power lines, the roof of an onion shed and a shop collapsed. Idaho Power is reporting more than 550 customers out of power as of Wednesday evening, but the number of outages was up to 4,000 when the storm hit.

The public is being asked to report fallen power lines to Malheur County Dispatch as crews work to clear the area of hazards.

The same storm also caused a lightning-started wildfire east of Vale, which is burning more than 4,000 acres.
