WALLA WALLA – The project to build a pedestrian and bicycle only bridge on Fifth Avenue over Mill Creek is temporarily on hold due to an archaeological investigation.
The contractor is planning to construct a ramp in the staging lot on the east side of Fifth Avenue to gain access to the Mill Creek channel. However, confirmation of no impact to any historical cultural resources is required for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to issue the access permit.
Brian Burns with Tri-State Steelheaders said he hopes the clearance to resume work will be given within the next week. Tri-State Steelheaders is a nonprofit group which promotes healthy salmon and steelhead populations and is managing this project.
The estimated $2.6 million project will remove the existing bridge and replace it with a pedestrian and bicycle only structure. Fish passage improvements will also be constructed in the Mill Creek channel.
Construction is expected to be completed in November.Photo via city of Walla Walla
