HERMISTON – Umatilla County Commissioner Dan Dorran says organizers for the Umatilla County Fair want people to know the parade route for the Kick-off Parade is changing. He said the new route came at the request of the Hermiston Police Department to make it easier to police the parade and keep the public safe.
He said the route will begin in the same place, but go in the opposite direction and will end at the same stopping point.
“We will eliminate almost 14 intersections that have to be manned and policed by law enforcement,” Dorran said. “The parade has become so big and attended so well that you have to treat it as a large event.”
Dorran gave a rough description of the route. He said it will go down Highland, up Highway 395 to Main Street and end in its normal stopping point. (See map for a detailed route.) He thinks the change will be for the better from the standpoint of watching the procession.
“In reality I think we’re going to end up with a greater viewing of the parade,” he said. “Crowds are always four to six people deep all the way around.”
The parade will be Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
