BAKER CITY — The Baker School District and the Baker County YMCA have announced free summer meal programs for children, ensuring that no child goes hungry while school is out of session.
The Baker School District will provide lunch and breakfast for the next day at no charge to children 18 and younger. These meals will be available most weekdays, Monday through Friday, through August 16, 2024. Meals can be picked up from 11:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the bus lanes of Baker High School, Brooklyn Primary School, and Haines Elementary. No pre-registration is required.
“We love this community and are grateful to have a Food Services team that is committed to working through the summer to help make sure that our youth don’t experience food insecurity while school isn’t in session,” said Lindsey Bennington-McDowell, spokesperson for the district. “We hope that the extra pick-up locations also make these meals even more accessible this year.”
Adults can also purchase meals by prepaying at the District Office located at 2090 4th Street, Baker City. Lunch is priced at $4.50, and breakfast is $3.50.
The Baker County YMCA is also playing a significant role in combating local food insecurity. Thanks to a $15,000 grant from the Albertsons and Safeway Foundation’s #NationalNeighbors Program and O Organics, the YMCA will distribute breakfast and lunch to children. Breakfast will be available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and cold lunches will be handed out from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fitness Center.
Additionally, snacks will be provided at the Pool after Open Swims and Swim Lessons.
