OXBOW — (Release by Idaho Power) The road over Hells Canyon Dam will be closed Tuesday, June 18, while Idaho Power crews perform required maintenance on the dam.
The road will be closed from 8 a.m.—noon, Mountain Time, and again from 1 p.m.—4:30 p.m. MT. Vehicles will be allowed to cross between noon and 1:00pm. Anyone traveling to the U.S. Forest Service’s Hells Canyon Creek Visitors Center or the boat launch should plan to cross outside of the work hours.
A crane will be used to lower employees down the face of the dam for weed removal, which will require the road closure. If weather conditions do not allow for completion of the work on June 18, the road will be closed June 19 as well. Check idahopower.com/whatsopen for updates.
Located 21 miles downstream of Oxbow Dam, Hells Canyon Dam is the third and last project in the Hells Canyon Project. It began generating electricity in 1967 and has a nameplate generating capacity of 411 megawatts – enough to power more than 315,000 homes.
