Two ewes dead in another wolf attack in Wallowa County

WALLOWA COUNTY — In yet another incident that has raised concerns among local ranchers, an unknown wolf or wolves have been confirmed to have killed two ewes in the Sled Springs Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) in Wallowa County. The attack occurred on June 3, 2024, on private land in the Swamp Creek area.

The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) confirmed the attack, which marks another instance of wolf-related livestock depredation in the region. The identity of the wolves involved in the attack remains unknown at this time.

Over the past several weeks, there have been multiple confirmed and probable wolf attacks in Wallowa County:

  • June 3, 2024: Two dead ewes in Sled Springs WMU, Wallowa County, Swamp Creek, private land.
  • May 27, 2024: One dead seven-month-old lamb in Minam WMU, Wallowa County, Lostine area, private land.
  • May 15, 2024: One dead two-month-old calf, probably killed by WA153, in Wallowa County, southwest of Flora, private land.
  • April 26, 2024: Multiple incidents involving an unknown wolf or wolves in the Sled Springs WMU, Wallowa County, Lostine area, private land—one dead ewe, one injured ewe, and seven dead month-old lambs (confirmed), and one probable dead lamb.
