JOHN DAY – Recently, our newsroom mentioned that John Day Canyon City Parks and Recreation will be hosting free summer lunch opportunities for local youth up to 18 years old, beginning June 17th.
Grant County Library Assistant Librarian Dovie Wood has youth programs available for this summer, and she said she goes where the kids go. Wood said she’ll be at the local parks where the free lunches are served, ready with activities:
“Part of my summer program is I try to hit Prairie City, John Day, and Mt. Vernon at least once a week. I try to set certain days I’ll be there. They can come to the park, and what I usually do, I’ll take a craft of some kind. It can either can be done with me, or if their parents need to get them home for whatever reason, I give it to them to go. I always have a box of books, and they can take two or three books.”
Once the program begins, Dovie will be at the Mt. Vernon park on Mondays at 1:15 p.m., at the 7th Street Sports Complex Tuesdays at noon, and at the Prairie City Park on either Wednesdays or Thursdays, depending on holidays, at 1:15 p.m.
