UMATILLA COUNTY – News release from the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office:
The week of April 21 Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is celebrating Search and Rescue Volunteer Appreciation Week. During this week Umatilla County Search and Rescue will be hosting screenings of an award-winning documentary “Where the Rope Ends” at venues throughout Umatilla County. Each event includes a viewing of the movie, a meet and greet with real search and rescue volunteers, and an opportunity to get hands-on with some of the equipment and technology that they use in their operations.
Search and Rescue volunteers will be on-site to answer questions, tell stories, and interact with the public. The events are meant to increase awareness of search and rescue, recruit potential volunteers, and raise funds to support this important resource in our community. Participants will also have an opportunity to leave with door prizes and a chance to win the grand prize of a Traeger Pro Series 22 Wood Pellet Bronze grill.
The movie “Where the Rope Ends” is a documentary about Nichole Doane, a trauma nurse from Seattle, who experienced a life-altering 60-foot fall after a rappelling error. The documentary tells the story of the terrifying moment of her fall and her rescue by search and rescue personnel. It also discusses the challenges she faced afterward due to severe physical injuries and explores her journey of recovery. “Where the Rope Ends” is a success story that has been selling out in theaters and earning awards at film festivals nationwide. The documentary has partnered with search and rescue organizations around the country to use as an awareness, fundraising, and recruitment tool.
Umatilla County Search and Rescue has received overwhelming support from community venues to help host the screenings. Area businesses have also supported the event through donations for door prizes.
Five individual ticketed events are scheduled throughout the week. Tickets and information about each event are available on the Umatilla County Search and Rescue (UMASAR) Foundation website at https://www.umasarfoundation.org/WhereTheRopeEnds.html

The mission of the UMASAR Foundation is to increase resources, raise funds, and promote public awareness in support of search and rescue activities (including training and missions) conducted by volunteers of the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office. These are the dedicated volunteers that the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office calls on at all times of the year to respond when others are in need. They make our community stronger. We encourage citizens to support search and rescue by enjoying an evening at the movies with these amazing volunteers.
