OSP gives a “hoot,” rescues baby barn owls near Haines

BAKER COUNTY – If firemen rescue cats from trees, does that mean policemen rescue birds from the ground? Apparently so. On Sunday, March 10, just after 9:00 a.m., an OSP trooper responded to a reported pair of stranded baby barn owls near a haystack just northeast of Haines. The official OSP description of the rescue operation is as follows:
“The Oregon State Police responded to a report of baby barn owls that were on the ground next to a large haystack. The reporting party advised that there was 2 deceased and 2 that were still alive. The Fish and Wildlife Trooper attempted to contact the reporting party as well as a landowner, however was unsuccessful. ODFW was contacted about the grounded pair of Tyto Furcata’s.” (American barn Owl). “The on-duty Patrol Trooper responded and located the baby owls after getting permission from the landowner. The orphaned owlets were transported to a secured area at ODFW as per their request.
