WA Democrats vote to prohibit firearms in more public places

OLYMPIA – Washington lawmakers are expanding the list of places in the state where firearms will be prohibited. Senate Bill 5444 will prohibit individuals from possessing weapons at libraries, zoos, aquariums, and transit stations.
The prohibitions do not apply to those with a concealed carry license.
Violations of the law will be a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.
The bill passed on the House floor on Feb. 27 with amendments. The vote was 58-36. On Monday, the Senate concurred with the amendments with a vote of 27-21. In both instances the minority Republican lawmakers urged that the bill not be passed.
Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign the bill, which will become law June 5, ninety days after the legislative session adjourns.
