SALEM – The Oregon Senate passed House Bill 4082 yesterday. It provides $30 million in state funding for summer learning this year. The measure passed the House of Representatives on Monday. Rep. Bobby Levy (R-Echo), Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner) and Sen. Bill Hansell (R-Athena) all voted in favor of the measure. Also in favor were Sen. Lynn Findley (R-Ontario) and Rep. Mark Owens (R-Vale).
The bill also creates a work group to develop recommendations for sustainable long-term funding for summer learning in the future. With bipartisan support, it sailed through the House 53 to 4 and passed the Senate 26 to 4.
The bill was sponsored by a bipartisan group of legislators and education experts from throughout the state. Its main sponsor was Rep. Susan McLain (D-Hillsboro).
Gov. Tina Kotek made It clear she plans to sign the bill into law, saying the evidence shows that summer learning reduces learning loss between school years, accelerates academic achievement, and strengthens student well being.
