UMATILLA COUNTY – A veritable alphabet soup of regional, state, and federal agencies are concerning themselves with high nitrate levels in private wells on the Lower Umatilla Groundwater Management Area.
Umatilla County Commissioner Dan Dorran says each agency has differing figures and viewpoints on dealing with the problem, which can be frustrating. He was recently pleased to learn that a woman from Pendleton is taking on the tough job of coordinating all of the work.
“Jane Hill has been selected for that position,” he said. “I think you could go around the whole U.S. and wouldn’t find somebody more qualified to take on a controversial issue and look at it from all sides and at the same time be able to coordinate these different agencies.”
Dorran said that Hill is being deployed by the National Policy Consensus Center to bring the collaborative efforts of all the groups together.
He talks about the complexity of bringing those agencies together in depth on the KUMA Coffee Hour podcast at the bottom of the home page for https://elkhornmediagroup.com/.
