With a spirit as vast and wild as the prairies she loved, we announce the passing of Makayla Paige Lafferty, known affectionately by her Oglala Sioux tribe as “White Elk Woman.” Born on December 13, 1997, in Burns, OR, Makayla was a charismatic soul whose love for life was as infectious as her radiant smile. She was a vibrant beacon of light who left an indelible imprint on the hearts of those she encountered. Makayla, an adventurous and spirited woman, had a unique ability to turn the ordinary into extraordinary. She was a magnet for adventure, whether it was a road trip to a new city or a spontaneous shopping spree. Her creativity shone in her work in retail sales where she was known for her exceptional customer service skills. She had an uncanny ability to connect with people, making every customer feel like a friend. Her love for photography allowed her to capture the beauty of the world around her, preserving moments that she held close to heart. Notably, she was a proud member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, a testament to her rich heritage and enduring connection to her ancestors. But of all her accomplishments and passions, what mattered most to Makayla was her daughter. She was not only an extraordinary woman but an exceptional mother. Her love for her daughter was profound and unwavering, illuminating every aspect of her life. As the poet Maya Angelou once said, “I sustain myself with the love of family,” a sentiment that resonated deeply with Makayla. She is survived by her mother, Tamara Lafferty, and her sister, Cierra Lafferty, who will forever cherish her memory. Makayla Lafferty, our beloved White Elk Woman, taught us the true essence of life – to live boldly, love deeply, and embrace every moment with a sense of adventure.
