BAKER COUNTY — The first large snowfall of the year has melted, but winter conditions still exist, especially on eastern Oregon roads.

On Thursday, January 25, law enforcement officials responded to the aftermath of a crash at the intersection of Wingville Lane and Highway 30, north of Baker City. The Baker County Sheriff’s Office says the incident occurred as a result of icy road conditions, serving as a stark reminder for motorists to use caution in adverse weather.

A truck lost control and slid through the intersection, colliding with another vehicle. The force of the impact led to the shearing off of a power pole. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

The BCSO received assistance from various agencies, including the Oregon State Police, Baker Rural Fire Rescue, Keating Rural Fire Protection District, Metro West Ambulance, Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative, High Mountain Towing, and Five Star Towing.

Authorities emphasize the importance of safety and vigilance when driving in winter, as both visibility and road conditions are compromised due to the icy and foggy weather. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and use caution to prevent further incidents.

Staying informed about current weather conditions and heeding travel advisories can contribute to safer journeys during challenging weather scenarios.
