COLLEGE PLACE – The city of College Place is exploring its recycling options now that neighboring Walla Walla has upped its recycling game.
City Administrator Mike Rizzitiello said the city suspended curbside recycling back in 2018 after learning from Basin Disposal that the recycled material intended to be shipped overseas to be processed was getting rejected at the ports for being too contaminated with non-recyclable material. That material was then shipped to a landfill in Arlington, Oregon for disposal.
The city is now exploring its options, including asking Basin Disposal to rule on whether residents must pay for curbside recycling, whether they opt for that service or not. Rizzitiello said the study will probably take about six months.
