UMATILLA COUNTY – Sheriff Terry Rowan says vehicle pursuits are increasing. There were two over the weekend and even though one was called off when it moved into a populated area, both of the alleged suspects were arrested.
“It’s hard to outrun a radio,” Rowan said of the pursuit that was initially abandoned.
One of the pursuits was discontinued twice by deputies, but all was not lost. An undercover police officer had heard of the pursuit, located the car, and saw the driver and two passengers go into a residence. Deputies responded there and took the driver into custody.
The second pursuit was a blast from the past for Rowan. A man who fled had a warrant out for his arrest. Not only did he try to escape. He also initially lied about his name and date of birth.
“Even back when I was a patrol deputy, this individual was committing a whole lot of burglaries and was sent to the state penitentiary for a long time, he said. “I think back in the day when I was working the case, I had 106 counts against him when I was working the case. Bad guys continue to be bad guys. You’d hope they’d come out reformed. Maybe some it sticks to but some it doesn’t.”
