WALLOWA – (Release from the Wallowa School District) Wallowa School District is excited to release:

$250K CTE Revitalization Grant provided by Oregon Department of Education to build an outdoor Natural Resources learning lab inclusive of: an industrial greenhouse to house an expanded aquaponics system, stream table, classroom space, and an enclosure to support year-round operation of our sawmill and skillsets learned in Forestry and the Natural Resources pathway. This space will be designed to ensure elementary students are exposed, middle school students are able to experiment, and high school students are immersed. Exposure, community partner and future workforce connections, and certifications are all objectives of our developing program.

Wallowa community has shown great support for the returning CTE pathway, from donation of a log deck to get going with the use of the sawmill to collaboration of Wallowa students assisting with land management to career connected opportunities with local agencies.  There is no doubt the community will come together in constructing this now feasible project, ensuring year-round learning despite Wallowa County’s unpredictable weather. While this doesn’t and won’t replace Wallowa County’s natural outdoor classroom, this space will provide a safe and monitored space without barriers to practice skillsets to apply in the bigger setting.
