Investigation into police shooting continues in Baker City as department faces officer shortage

BAKER CITY — Two Baker City Police officers remain on leave after shooting a suspect who brandished a gun.
The incident occurred around 2:00am on Tuesday, January 2 near Clark and Church streets. Police say during a routine traffic stop, a suspect pulled out a weapon and the responding officers shot them. The suspect was taken to an area hospital.
Details on the incident are slim.
The suspect’s name and condition has still not been released.
The names of the two officers who opened fire have also not been released, but both are on paid administrative leave, per protocol.
The Baker City Police Department is already dealing with a shortage of patrol officers, with Chief Ty Duby recently announcing cutting patrols during early morning hours.
“Looking ahead is daunting. We hopefully can get some help from other agencies for a period of time.” said Chief Duby on how the department plans to address the loss of two more officers who are on leave.
