BAKER COUNTY — (Release from the BCSO) On November 2, 2023 at approximately 7:04 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of an overdue hunter in the area of Old Auburn and Elkhorn Ridge. James Asell, (56 yoa) of Medford, Oregon, was hunting with a group but left the camp in the early morning hours to go on a solo hunt and had not been seen or heard from since. His cell phone was located at the camp. Members of the hunting party located Asell’s vehicle, and conducted a search. Asell was reportedly familiar with the area and prepared for the elements.

Sheriff Ash activated the Baker County Search and Rescue Team, with nine members deploying to the area before daybreak. SAR members met with the hunting party at their camp and began a ground search.

At approximately 10:14 a.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that the overdue hunter had been located on Salmon Creek Road after he approached a residence and asked for help. Deputy Robb responded to the location and found Asell cold and tired but otherwise in good condition. During his hunt the day prior, Asell had difficulty finding his way back to camp after dense fog and rain set in. He attempted to start a fire but was unsuccessful due to the wet conditions but did have a pack with food and water. Asell hiked throughout the night until he ultimately made it to the residence on Salmon Creek Road.

Baker County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the dedicated Baker County Search and Rescue volunteers for their efforts.
