PENDLETON – September is golden for employment in Umatilla County. Oregon Employment Department Regional Economist Dallas Fridley says that the county’s nonfarm employment rose by 760 jobs to 30,300 last month, which is an annual event as teachers return to school and cowboys and cowgirls head for the Round-Up City.
“Leisure and hospitality was top dog in September with the return of the Pendleton Round-Up, helping to lift that industry by 90 jobs to 3,150,” Fridley said.
Other private industry gainers included transportation, warehousing, and utilities; and education and health services.
What goes up must come down, as the song goes. Fridley said that will happen when they analyze the employment figures from this month.
“We’re not going to have the nice bump that we had from leisure and hospitality in October,” he said. “In fact we’ll lose those jobs that we gained in September and a few more.”
