UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man who allegedly stole a recreational vehicle near Touchet yesterday and drove it across the state line to north of Milton-Freewater. UCSO Undersheriff Jim Littlefield said there were initial reports of shots fired from the RV, but it was suspected the vehicle was backfiring.
Approximately one hour after the incident, the owner of the RV called in and reported he had tracked it to an address off West Crockett Road and he had eyes on the vehicle. UCSO Deputy Trevor Limburg responded to the incident.
Upon Limburg’s arrival, the vehicle pulled out and started traveling down West Crockett Road.
“Deputy Limburg began pursuing the RV at slow speeds, awaiting the arrival of OSP (Oregon State Police),” Littlefield said.
Before the state police arrived, the driver turned onto Didion Lane, which is a dead end. When the vehicle stopped, the deputy issued commands to get the driver on the ground while he waited for backup. Stanley Dean Crewse, 58, was taken into custody without incident.
He is lodged at Umatilla County Jail on felony possession of a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor attempt to elude. It is anticipated that charges will also be lodged against him in Walla Walla County.
