Walla Walla Post Office plans Oct. 10 reopening

WALLA WALLA – The Walla Walla Post Office, 128 N 2nd Ave., is anticipated to reopen to all
customers early next week. Because Monday, Oct. 9 is a federal holiday, the office will reopen for business on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 8 a.m. The office has been closed since Sept. 20 due to a gas leak detected in the area.
The Walla Walla Post Office is open for retail operations Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.,
and Saturday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Post Office box access is available seven days a week, 6
a.m. – 10 p.m.
In a statement released Friday, the United States Postal Service said “Customer and employee safety is the top priority of the Postal Service. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their patience and understanding during the closure.”
A separate update from the city of Walla Walla Friday afternoon said that on Thursday, staff from Walla Walla Public Works and Jacobs (the operator of the Wastewater Treatment Plant) gave approval for up to 25 gallons per minute of filtered water to be discharged into the wastewater system. About 1,900 gallons were subsequently discharged on Thursday. Clean Harbors is expected to resume filtering contaminated water through the six-stage filtration system today (Friday).
Clean Harbors pumped about 2,000 gallons of contaminated water from two monitoring wells on Thursday, and approximately 3,000 gallons from the sumps in the 106 N. 2nd Ave. building and the Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center.
