Baker City Mayor Responds to Recall Effort Against Her

BAKER CITY — Baker City Mayor Beverly Calder is now responding to an effort to remove her from office.
In a statement to Elkhorn Media Group, Calder says “I respect the process by which constituents can voice their disapproval, but I am hopeful that the majority of people will see this as a waste of city resources and a distraction from the work that is underway to keep Baker City a place people want to live, work and play. Effective and efficient governance is essential to maintaining our quality of life and I am going to continue to focus my efforts on the significant policy issues and opportunities at hand.”
The city says it approved a petition to recall Mayor Beverly Calder on Tuesday, September 19.
Baker City resident Bryan Dalke filed the petition with the city on Thursday, September 14. Dalke now has until December 13 (90 days since he filed) to gather approximately 747 signatures from registered voters in town to force a recall election.
Dalke listed several reasons why he thinks Calder should be recalled:
Dalke says he’ll begin advertising on social media and will set up locations around town to begin collecting signatures. If the required amount of signatures is received and verified, Calder would have a chance to resign before an election is triggered.
Calder told Elkhorn Media Group she is not planning on resigning.
