GRANT COUNTY – John Day District ODFW Wildlife Biologist Ryan Torland was in the KJDY newsroom recently, informing listeners of a new opportunity for hunting turkeys on private property here locally:
“It’s called a Turkey Damage Permit for Grant County. We’re getting large flocks on lands, mostly around the John Day Valley and up around the Middle Fork. You get a permit for $26.50, and you can kill three hens or beardless turkeys. You can buy three of those permits a year.
It’s all on private land, and I believe it’s in Murderer’s Creek, Northside, Desolation, and Southeast Heppner Units.”
Torland said large flocks that gather tend to cause extensive damage to private property.
