Hay trailer fire west of Mt. Vernon may smolder a while

MT. VERNON – On Monday night, at about 7:10 p.m., the Grant County Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding a hay truck on fire, about 7 miles west of Mt. Vernon. The incident happened on Highway 26, near milepost 147.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported hay truck fire on the evening of the 12th near mile post 147 on Highway 26.

Units from the Mt. Vernon Fire Department responded as well, and found a tilt deck trailer load of hay on fire. The reporting party, Tucker Wright of Canyon City, was able to separate his pickup from the trailer before the fire spread to the tow vehicle.

Traffic was blocked in the area for about two hours as equipment from L&L Excavating was brought in to move the hay and the damaged trailer.

ODOT later arrived on scene and took over traffic control as OSP was unavailable.

Fortunately, the incident occurred in an area that had a limited threat to the roadside wildland fire spreading and creating further problems.

The hay will continue to smolder for some time, and Mt. Vernon Fire units will monitor it and apply additional water as needed.

Sheriff McKinley would like to thank all those that responded and assisted with the fire, as well as the adjacent property owner who allowed the use of the land in the efforts.
