Unexpected discovery made during demolition

WALLA WALLA – Port of Walla Walla commissioners recently approved a new project budget of $144,113 for demolition of the old terminal building for construction of aviation hangars. The budget change comes after demolition crews made an unexpected discovery at the southeast corner of the building.

While Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting Company of Waitsburg was removing a 1,000-gallon diesel tank, a second 1,000-gallon diesel tank buried directly beneath the first was exposed. The second tank was found to be leaking diesel into the soil.

Port staff had to approve an immediate second agreement with Blue Mountain Environmental for tank removal, soil removal and testing. The testing of the soil will determine the appropriate disposal method.
